Beer Bread ~ homemade gifts ideas

Beer bread is a quick bread. It goes great with soups, and stews, it is also perfect toasted with honey or jam, and I also love to cut it up and serve it with a dip as an appetizer. This beer bread recipe is also a great DIY gift to give. You can jump right to the recipe card and I’ll tell you how, or read on for the play by play of how to make beer bread.

My mom was the Queen of Homemade Gifts when I was young. Recently she told me that one year when we were kids, finances were particularly tight and she made all the Christmas gifts for $20. Yes, that’s right twenty dollars. Can you imagine? Granted it was the mid 70’s, but still. She sewed, knitted, painted, baked, and canned. She recycled old and made it new. People loved it! They began to expect it and look forward to what my mom was going to create and give. She was famous for her knitted slippers. For the record I am not that frugal, but most of the gifts I am going to share will cost you less than $5  to make, and they could be given to a man or a woman. Perfect for teachers, coaches, neighbors, bus drivers, and anyone else you would like to give a little somethin’ to!

  • all purpose flour
  • baking powder
  • sugar
  • salt
  • a 12 ounce beer
  • butter

If you are going to make the Beer Bread mix you will just need five things and I am sure you have four of them on hand. The fifth would be the packaging. Now I went to the Webstaurant Store and bought these wonderful 1/2 lb plastic lined bags in bulk because they are cheaper that way, but you could also get creative and package this any number of ways.

Let’s get started. It’s as easy as 1,2,3!

Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt together in a large mixing bowl, create a well in the center of the dry ingredients.

pouring a can of beer into dry ingredients for beer bread

Pour the beer (it can be any type of beer) and 2 tablespoons of melted butter into the well in the center of your dry ingredients and mix with a bread whisk or spatula.

Batter will be thick and lumpy, this is just fine, make sure there are no pockets of dried ingredients and when batter is mixed well.

Pour batter into a buttered bread pan and place in preheated 375 degree oven bake for 0-60 minutes.

Remove from oven and pour last tablespoon of butter over the top or do as I did above and just swirl it around and let it melt over the hot bread straight out of the oven.

Mix all the dry ingredients together and place in a food safe bag. I used a plastic lined brown paper bag with wire tabs for secure closure. I ordered these online.

I didn’t get too fancy, as you can see. I also wrote out the recipe on a note card with directions, so they could make it again. I also gave them a can of beer, all they need to add is the butter. I have also put this in a bread pan and wrapped it up with clear cellophane and a bow. It makes a really nice gift for a male teacher, bus driver, or repairman.

I hope this recipe gives you inspiration to give food gifts! Please share this post on your socials, Pin it, and if you make it and love it give it all the stars below! Thank you so much, Sheila

This bread is a simple no yeast batter bread that comes together in minutes and goes well with soups, stews, and as simple appetizer with dips. In the notes I have instructions for how to give this simple bread as a "do it yourself" bread kit.

Notes

Giving Beer Bread as a “do it yourself” gift:  Add dry ingredients together, and place them in a food safe plastic bag, or a paper bag that is lined and used for packaging food.  Write the ingredients and directions out on a note card.  Give them a beer along with the cute packaged beer bread mix.  All they need to add is the butter!  You could even gift this to them in a bread pan.

  1. Sheila~
I am ALWAYS scrambling before Christmas break to make sure I have something for each of the teachers that work with my boys (since Bray is still in daycare the # is in the double digits!). I am SO thankful that you are starting this series! I am SO excited to see what else you've got up your sleeve! I'm doing this FOR SURE this year!! THANK YOU!!!

  2. Good point Kim(at the top) if you have self rising flour on hand you could use 3 cups of self rising flour and then you would not need to add the baking powder and salt. Even easier!

  3. This post makes me VERY excited because I've been paying an incredibly excessive amount of money at Pampered Chef parties for boxes of beer bread. I don't know why it hadn't dawned on me to make my own. This is yet another reason why I love cooking blogs!! Thanks! 🙂

  4. Great idea! I have another recipe for beer bread that uses self risisng flour. I'm in the midst of making some "crafts" for Christmas as well!
