Cut-out Sugar Cookie Recipe
These cookies are my go-to sugar cookie recipe. My sister-in-law gave it to me many years ago. The cookies are tender and melt in your mouth. If you love Lofthouse cookies, this recipe is for you. They are not frosted; rather, I ice them with a thin icing. However, you can frost them if that is what you like.

This sugar cookie is one of my kids’ favorite cookies. They beg me to make them. I have tried many sugar cookie recipes, and I will have to agree: this one is the best. It’s full of flavor, and it melts in your mouth. I have tasted many sugar cookies that fall flat in the flavor department, but not this one. It’s buttery, rich, and with a hint of vanilla.
Dig through your cookie cutters and find the appropriate cutter for the holiday. I have a whole bucket of cookies cutters. Thanks to my garage sale loving Aunt who has made quite a collection for me with her finds.
I am not a master at decorating cookies. As you can see from the cookie below, it looks like it encountered a drive-by shooting. However, no matter how well you decorate these cookies, they are, in my father’s words, scrump-dilly-icious! So whether you have a knack for decorating or not, I can promise you they will taste delicious. I actually left half of mine unfrosted. They are great for dunking.
I am not even going to attempt to tell you how to decorate a cookie. Because I stink at it. So if you want to make some really beautiful artsy cool cookies then you’re on your own honey.
Sugar Cookies
Equipment
- mixer
- 2 baking sheets
- parchment paper
- cookie cutters
Ingredients
- 1 cup softened butter 2 sticks
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 2 whole eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 4 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp cream of tartar
Icing
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tbsp milk
- 1-2 drop lemon juice
- 1 tbsp corn syrup
Instructions
When ready to bake preheat oven to 375°, line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Measure flour, baking powder, salt, and cream of tarter into a small bowl, set aside.
- Add softened butter and sugars to mixing bowl, cream together using paddle attachment (if using a stand mixer).
- Gradually add in vegetable oil and vanilla extract.
- Add eggs one at a time. Beat until smooth and creamy, about 3 minutes.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients. When the dough is completely incorporated, dump it out onto a floured countertop and divide it into 4 balls. Wrap each ball of cookie dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 2-24 hours. The dough is more manageable when it's cold.
- Remove cookie dough from refrigerator one ball at a time. Lightly dust counter top with flour and roll dough out to a little less than 1/2 inch thickness. Cut out cookie shapes. Using a spatula pick up cut out dough and transfer it to prepared cookie sheet.
- Bake in a preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, when cookies start to brown around the edges take them out and transfer to cooling rack.
Icing
- Combine icing ingredients in a small bowl. When cookies are cooled, ice them with icing using a spatula or dipping the cookie face down in the bowl of icing. You can also use a piping bag if you want to get fancy.

These cookies looks so cute. I want it badly for my valentines day. I should prepare the ingredients to make hundreds of these cookies to share with my love ones.
