I love how much better these crispy chips taste than store-bought pita chips. They are thick and crunchy but also have a bit of chewiness to them. These easy homemade pita chips stand up to all my favorite dips; spinach artichoke dip, roasted vegetable with hummus dip, baba ganoush, olive tapenade, and they are perfect with bruschetta.

  • pita bread
  • extra virgin olive oil
  • kosher salt, or sea salt

There is no exact recipe for making crispy pita chips. I will give you the guide lines for how I make them, just know that it is very simple you can make more or less than I have. I promise you they will be fantastic!

pita bread on a wood cutting board. Pita bread being cut with a knife
  1. The bag of pita bread I purchased had 8 pieces in it. Using a large knife or pizza cutter cut each piece of pita bread into 8 pita triangles. Preheat oven to 400 degrees, make sure the rack is in the middle of the oven.

2. Pile all the pita triangles on a large baking sheet. (If you are making a large batch of pita chips you may need to use two sheet pans and rotate them in your oven.) Drizzle the olive oil over the bread. Using your hands toss the pita around to assure it gets coating with the olive oil.

3. Sprinkle with salt about 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt or kosher salt. The amount of salt you choose to use is totally up to you. You can leave it out entirely if you are cutting back on sodium. See the Tips & Variations section for optional seasonings.

4. Spread the bread out into a single layer over the sheet pan. The bread can touch and even overlap somewhat. Sprinkle with more salt or seasoning of your choice. Place in 400 degree preheated oven for 10 minutes. Remove sheet pan from oven and with tongs flip pita triangles over, return to oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes. Or until the homemade chips are as toasted and crunchy as you would like. Watch them carefully they can go from toasted and crispy to burnt fast! Also keep in mind as they cool they will crisp up even more.

Allow them to cool on the pan. Serve them warm with your favorite dip or allow them to cool completely before storing them in an airtight container for later use.

  1. Seasonings: Get creative!! This recipe is very basic. (By the way I cannot say basic without hearing the voice of Anna Sorokin/Delvey, if you know you know, if you don’t I’m sorry I mentioned it.) The simplicity of this recipe is perfection, however do not be afraid to spice it up a bit and add whatever seasoning you choose. Add them just as you would the salt, half to start, spread triangles out in a single layer then sprinkle with the remaining seasoning. Here are a few seasonings that I love to add: Everything Seasoning, Italian seasoning, Za’atar, Lemon Pepper, add Black Pepper to the salt, garlic powder, sprinkle with your favorite herbs or Chili Powder. These are just the few I have used if you have another idea, please let me know!! Check out the recipe card for directions.
  2. Pita Bread: Usually I use whatever pita bread is on sale. I have used pita pocket bread. I’ve used the pita that has no pocket. I have used whole wheat pita bread. it all works. I will say the pita with a pocket makes for thinner crunchy pita chips, while the pita without the pocket makes for thicker chips.
  3. Serving: I love serving these warm with a hearty dip. I have listed a few below. You can also make these ahead of time and warm them up by placing them on a baking sheet and popping them in a 350 degree oven for 5 minutes.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

  • Cut each piece of pita bread into 8 triangles.
  • Pile pita bread triangles on a sheet pan and drizzle with olive oil, using your hands to toss bread around making sure each piece has olive oil on it. Sprinkle with half of the salt, toss around a bit more.
  • Spread pita out in a single layer on a baking sheet. The bread can over lap a little bit do not be afraid to cover every inch of the baking sheet with the pita triangles. Sprinkle with remaining salt.

Note: if you want your chips crispier you can leave them in longer, however be sure to watch them closely so they do not burn. They will crisp up as they cool.
  • Remove from oven and allow to cool on the baking sheet. You can serve them warm or let them cool completely and store in an airtight container for eating at a later time.

Notes

Seasoning:  There are many ways you can season your pita chips, here are a few suggestions: black pepper, lemon pepper, chili powder, za’atar, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, everything seasoning.
All of these can be used in the same way the salt was.  Sprinkle half on before arranging in a single layer on sheet pan then sprinkle the remaining seasoning over all the chips.
